Author Biography

Danny Keenan, Ngāti Te Whiti ki Te Ātiawa, Independent Historian

Danny Keenan (Ngāti Te Whiti ki Te Ātiawa) completed a PhD at Massey University in 1994 and became lecturer/senior lecturer there. He was a founding member of Te Pouhere Kōrero (a collective of Māori historians) in 1992. In 2009, a Fulbright Award enabled him to teach New Zealand history at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Danny has published widely on Māori/New Zealand history. In 2016 he received a Ngā Kupu Ora Māori Book Award for his Te Whiti o Rongomai and the Resistance of Parihaka (Huia, 2015). Danny’s recent books include The Fate of the Land: Ko ngā Ākinga a ngā Rangatira (Massey University Press, 2023). Danny was also awarded the Michael King Fellowship in 2023 and is currently working on his manuscript . He is now a full-time writer living in Whanganui.
